Featuring South Indian classical dance and live music
Brought to Flat Rock Playhouse by Nrithyanjali School of Dance in Greenville, SC, Krishna is the epic tale of the 9th incarnation of the Hindu God, Lord Vishnu. This dance-drama will lead the audience on a journey through Krishna’s life, filled with mischief and adventure, all the while interspersed with his teachings of duty, consequences, and virtue – the doctrines of karma and dharma. Krishna is a beautiful combination of song, dance, and drama, brought to life with colorful sets, imaginative costumes, and 30+ highly skilled, local Carolinas performers. The music will be provided by a highly celebrated, 6-member orchestra ensemble, including Indian classical male and female vocals, flute, violin, and percussion instruments, such as Indian drums, called the mridangam, and cymbals.
Sunitha Raj, the choreographer and director of Krishna, is a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer and performer, and a very popular movie star from South India. She aims to bring the world closer together through the understanding of and appreciation for the differences between various cultures and values. Her passion for dance resulted in the foundation of Nrithyanjali School of Dance, based out of Greenville, SC for the past 15 years. The school has kept this 2000-year-old traditional Indian classical dance alive and vibrant by training students from North & South Carolina.
