From the Director – Boeing Boeing

In 1996, I got my Equity card doing a production of Swingtime Canteen in Atlantic City (coincidentally this is the first show I did here at the Rock in ‘98!). I was very excited and humbled to be working with so many talented and experienced actresses and musicians, one of whom was a woman named Ruth Williamson. She had been on Broadway, done numerous TV commercials and series, and was (and is) one of finest comic actresses I’ve known. She was very into the “science” of comedy, and we spent many an evening in her room, watching and analyzing various comedic “bits”:  Cloris Leachman and Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein,   Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and Tim Conway on The Carol Burnett Show, Mel Brooks and Bea Arthur in History of the World-—she had EVERYTHING.

Thus began my own love affair with the science and rhythm of comedy. I had always loved to laugh at it, but learned so much from Ruth about how to CREATE it. I can’t think of a better opportunity to apply all that I’ve learned over the years than directing Boeing Boeing. It’s witty, silly, absurd, and hilarious. I’ve been blessed with a group of sublimely talented actors and actresses, and a design and production team that understand and appreciate the style. We’ve had so much fun creating it, and I have no doubt that you will have just as much fun seeing it. Hopefully you won’t even think about the “science” of it all; you’ll be laughing too hard!
