Agudas Israel Synagogue is partnering with YouTheatre of Flat Rock Playhouse to present, I Never Saw Another Butterfly.  A triumph of the human spirit, I Never Saw Another Butterfly shares the hopes, the fears, and the beauty of the children of the Terezin concentration camp.  Told from the perspective of one of Terezin’s survivors, I Never Saw Another Butterfly is based on a collection of poems written by the children of the Jewish Ghetto in Terezin and chronicles the experiences of these children of the Holocaust, and celebrates the strength and beauty of the human spirit, embodied in their artwork.

It is estimated that 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin, the Jewish ghetto and concentration camp, located outside Prague, and only about a hundred survived.  In an effort to remember the innocent children who perished in the Holocaust, YouTheatre is collecting handmade butterflies as part of “The Butterfly Project” (inspired by the Houston Holocaust Museum).  The butterflies will become part of the set design for the moving memory drama presented this fall.

Agudas Israel and YouTheatre encourage all who are interested to create as many handmade arts-and-crafts butterflies as possible.

“The Butterfly Project” guidelines for submissions:

  • Butterflies should be no larger than 8.5 inches by 11 inches.
  • Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but two-dimensional submissions are preferred.
  • Glitter and all glitter-related products should not be used
  • Food products (cereal, macaroni, candy, marshmallows or other perishables) also should not be used.
