Education and Outreach

YT is a place where kids can be themselves, a place where individuality is encouraged and using your voice is celebrated! It is an environment where a child can grow, explore, imagine, and learn in a welcoming home that fosters self-esteem, inspires innovation, and promotes leadership. As we celebrate this anniversary year we recognize the impact YT has had on the growth of the Playhouse throughout the decades. With five full time dedicated teachers, we are proud to provide the best arts education available, not only in the region, but nationwide. We offer our students opportunities to work with professional artists and technicians who are leaders in their fields. As a vital and fundamental component of the State Theatre of North Carolina, YouTheatre of Flat Rock Playhouse believes in developing contributing, collaborative, responsible members of the community. We are proud of our students and honored by our alumni. We invite you to visit our state of the art facility and peruse our website, to catch a glimpse of the many exciting opportunities YouTheatre offers our community, and our region! What we offer:

YouTheatre offers classes in drama, voice, music, dance, and visual arts throughout the academic year, and an extensive listing of camps during the summer. We offer workshops, field trips, and residencies to school and community groups, on site and on location.

Why it Matters:

I love taking classes at YouTheatre. I love to be able to express myself in art and acting. We don’t get to do art or acting like this in my school. I’m really thankful I have a place to go to do this really fun stuff. YouTheatre is a great place with really nice people.Katie, age 10
As a YT student for several years, I have developed a great passion for the arts. I now hope to pursue a career in the arts, a direction I would have never imagined without being involved at YouTheatre. The tools that I have gained through classes and professional experiences with FRP have enabled me to develop and strengthen my own personal character, and I hope that others have the same if not better experience.Heath Wines, age 16
“I think the biggest thing YT gives a child is confidence.” Christi Hughes, YT parent
The excellent, well-rounded YouTheatre education I received from 1990 to 1999 has served me throughout all phases of my Broadway career, from my debut at 16 in the original cast of Susan Stroman’s 2000 revival of The Music Man to my work as choreographer of this season’s Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, featuring music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge. I couldn’t be more grateful for everything I learned here.Chase Brock, YT alumni, Broadway Choreographer
